Chapter Eight

Curt was sure his heart had stopped. Those words, spoken in Janice’s quietly seductive voice, were the last words he heard from her until they were in the car and pulling away from the restaurant. For all he knew, they would be the last words she ever spoke to him, and who could blame her. Even while he was explaining his action to her in the restaurant, he felt a deep sense of shame. Well, perhaps not shame, but utter stupidity. He should have thought his speech out better, practiced it on Sasha, something, anything. He’d given it his best shot and obviously blown his only chance to clear the air and make things right between them. Now what could he do other than accept the fact that she wasn’t going to forgive him?

“Let’s go to your house, Curt. I want to show you a few things and we can finish our talk,” Janice said calmly.

Curt was glad for the darkness of the car. If there had been more light than the ones on the dashboard, Janice would have been able to see the utter gratitude all over his face, which he was sure made him look like a true fool. Curt nodded his head, not quite able to formulate a response. Janice seemed so calm, not angry at all. But she hadn’t acknowledged his apology, either. They sat next to each other on the huge distressed leather sofa that was the very epitome of comfort; Curt had never seen a sofa so accommodating to his big body or so easy on the eye. It blended perfectly with the vivid, warm, yet masculine atmosphere Janice had created for him. He looked over at Janice, who was looking gorgeous in the warm amber light that she hurt his eyes. He was trying to think of something to say to break the ice when Janice spoke.

“So. You do remember me from college and you were pretending that you didn’t in order to hurt my feelings because someone told you some lies about me that you believed. Is that about the size of it?” she asked.

She used a normal
